Confused about new energy pricing?

There has been a lot of recent media about new legislation that was meant to protect businesses and households from high energy pricing, however for most this has added to the confusionopoly of the energy market.

New Energy Legislation Explained

  • Since the 1st July 2019, the Default Market Offer (DMO) has replaced standing offer energy plans for customers in the New South Wales, South East Queensland, South Australia and the Victorian Default Offer (VDO) has replaced standing offer energy plans for customers in Victoria, however this only affects 23% of small business and 14% of households.
  • Standing offers were the most expensive rates paid by customers who had not actively switched to a retailer market offer contract, although the DMO & VDO rates will be cheaper for these customers, by shopping around and using an energy comparison service from our partner Make it Cheaper, customers on the new rates will find additional average savings of up to 18% by switching to a market offer.
  • Industry leaders such as Australian Energy Chair Paula Conboy have stated: ‘Australians market offers are almost always cheaper than the DMO, and shopping around for a deal that best fits the needs of your household or business is the best way to reduce your power bill.”

Regardless if you are on a new default offer or a market offer, 80%* of the market are still overpaying on energy bills. To cut through the confusion, we encourage you to get an energy cost comparison from our partner Make it Cheaper. They take the pain away from shopping around for better energy rates to help save you money on your energy bills.

R&CA CEO, Wes Lambert added  “We have had a great start to our campaign to save our members $1 million in energy savings, however there is more to be done, I encourage all businesses in eligible markets to see what significant savings they can make, it takes no time at all, the new energy legislation reduces costs for some of our members on standing offers, but there are further savings to be had for our members regardless of what offer you are currently on.”
