Winning the Award

The first phase of the battle against the Modern Award has been won, but there’s still more to do.

Restaurant & Catering Australia is now moving very quickly to cement the benefit from the victory of achieving a separate modern restaurant award. This decision was a huge win, however brings with it the challenge of now re-negotiating the Modern Award in the Australian Industrial Relations Commission.

Whilst there has been little time to reflect on the reason for our recent success, it is clear that it was 100 per cent down to the efforts of R&CA. In the process of achieving this outcome, the Association received a lot of support from many people. One of the outstanding experiences was the dealings the Association had the Senator Xenophon. The Senator from South Australian has a very difficult job given the vast number of issues on which he has the final say. The Association’s dealings with Senator Xenophon demonstrated a maturity of process, very detailed analysis of the industry’s claims and forceful advocacy with the Government once our case had been proven. The industry should be thankful to Senator Xenophon for his support of a separate modern award for restaurants and caterers. You will soon receive a letter from me urging your financial support for the next phase in our advocacy effort. We need these contributions to continue to fight for the simplest, most flexible modern restaurant award possible. Please help us help you!
