A popular restaurant, Milanos on the Lake, has partially collapsed in the NSW Hunter region. Two people were inside but managed to escape uninjured, with one female resident telling emergency services she heard a loud bang before seeing the walls cracking. She climbed out uninjured and was comforted by witnesses.
Newcastle superintendent at NSW Fire & Rescue Brett Davies said the crew had found the building had suffered “severe structural faults” and it appeared the piers below the front of the building had “gone from underneath.”
“We can’t get in there to have a look and see how many piers have gone; that’s why we’re really restricting access.
“We’re lucky it didn’t happen yesterday when the restaurant was fully operating at lunchtime, because it could have caused severe injuries to people.”
The restaurant owners were distraught, Davies said. “It’s their livelihood. At the moment we’re trying to assist them as much as we can to minimise the concern they have.”
