Supporting local businesses

shop smallAlthough the frequency of spend in small businesses has fallen over the past year, customers are still happy to support local business—and this includes local cafes and restaurants.

American Express’s annual Economy of Shopping Small Report has found frequency of spend in small businesses has fallen by 12 per cent over two years among those who shop at least once a week at a local shopping village. This has led to a call by small business operators to consumers to do more.

November marks the month of Shop Small, a national movement founded by American Express to shine the spotlight on the importance of small businesses.

“Australia is a nation of small businesses and family enterprises, and there is no doubt they lie at the heart of Australia’s economic engine room,” Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman Kate Carnell said.

“Running a small business demands … a real focus on the customer; giving them an enjoyable experience. If we get that balance right, small businesses will be able to realise the benefits of competitive participation and economic growth.”
