With the government reluctant to make changes, it is up to the industry to try to fight award modernisation.
I hope by now you have seen some of the media coverage around the Award Modernisation process. We have certainly been driving the issue very hard.
The Association met with the Deputy Prime Minister and the Small Business Minister prior to activating a media campaign. Deputy Prime Minister Gillard requested the Association wait until the process of modernisation was complete before taking any action, which we did. At the recent meeting, she expressed a reticence to intervene in the workings of the commission and, therefore, the industry was only left with a public debate to pursue its interests.
In addition to Award Modernisation, other aspects of the IR changes are an issue for the industry. ‘Low Paid’ bargaining arrangements, the Fair Work Australia arbitration arrangements and the threshold number for small business are all areas needing attention in the bill.
The Association has been trying to engage the minority Senators with solutions in these areas.
We need your help to affect change to the proposed ‘Modern’ Award. Please support the campaign, write to your local member and be active in pursuing your business interests.
