Our rich multicultural heritage is really something our industry should be proud of.
It struck me at the recent Lifetime Achievers event that most of our recipients were migrants to Australia and all are icons of our industry.
The heritage of our legends Carlo Tossolini, Peter Morelli and Hans Lang could be nothing but European. The truth is our cuisine, our industry and our country are so much better for the enormous contributions these individuals have made. Where would we be without the rich Italian heritage in our restaurants, the produce those restaurateurs and chefs brought to Australia, and the way in which they’ve adapted a great cuisine to Australian conditions? German heritage has also made its mark, with the array of smallgoods, pastries and cuisine loved by so many.
This year we once again had Henschke support the dinner with their amazing wines. The Henschke story is also a great compliment to the history of food and wine story from our restaurateurs. Stephen and Prue Henschke (represented on the night by daughter Justine) are themselves Lifetime Achievers. We thank them for supporting the event and thank Fine Wine Partners for making this possible.
Next year’s Lifetime Achievers event will hopefully be a Henschke dinner too, and held at Parliament House. We will have a guest chef as well to tempt a few more parliamentarians to the table—I hope that whets the appetite!
