The industry is getting rightly tired of government changing things for the sake of change.
Well, we have made it through another lot of workplace relations reforms, and now we have to deal with a Federal Election. Let’s just hope the outcome is not more change for our businesses.
Whilst some relief from some of the increased costs would be welcomed, there is a real argument for at least some reasonable period of time where wage rates and employment conditions stay the same.
I have lost count of the number of times we have had to relook at all of our pay rates and salaries. This was not driven by our staff or any burning desire to reward huge performance increases. It was driven by another layer of reform to supposedly make things better for employees. I am not exactly sure how driving employers to distraction makes things better.
Every change in the system is a real headache for labour intensive businesses like ours. The time spent checking and re-checking takes away from what we are really about—making customers happy.
So who are the sinners here? Not the customers, not the staff and certainly not the business operation! Reform for the sake of it, or for the sake of political point scoring, makes no sense to anyone. Lets all get on with what we are here to do!
