The nominations for the 2015 Awards for Excellence
In most States, applications for this year’s Awards for Excellence are greater than 2014 in both restaurants and caterers—a positive sign for the industry with many applications being in the New Restaurant category.
Operators of these new businesses are enthusiastic about the quality of their products and are keen to showcase it through the Awards process.
Many applications are previous entrants, who use the judging process as an opportunity to compare operations in 2015 to the years past. The judging feedback provides a useful benchmark for businesses to use.
The entries reveal important industry trends. The Fine Dining category dwindles in appeal as fewer businesses want to present themselves as ‘fine dining’. This is presumably due to the growth in restaurant visitation gravitating toward less formal service offerings.
There have been changes to categories in the Awards program this year. The categories for cafe/coffee-shop style dining have been grouped together where there are too few entries in a region to run separately; similarly for the categories for businesses with offerings other than food (ie. Restaurant in a Hotel, Club, Bar). This will eliminate some ‘honourable mention’ recipients.
I hope to see you at one of our Restaurant & Catering HOSTPLUS Awards for Excellence events in the coming months.
